As you may be able to see from the somewhat…empty state of the content on here, I’m in the process of transitioning from my old site to this one. Goodbye Wordpress, hello Hugo. So please don’t judge too harshly if things are a bit rough around the edges. Well, more rough than usual.
So, why am I doing this you ask? Well, honestly, I just like to play every now and then. But I think I wanted to take back a bit more control rather than relying on finding a theme that wasn’t quite right and attempting to modify it into what I wanted. Admittedly, I did a bit of the same here by taking a base Hugo theme and modifying it to my purpose. However, with Hugo and a static site I think there is much more flexibility to accomplish what I want, even if that is a generally minimal as minimal gets site.
There is also a small but still noticeable financial reason. By switching to a static site, I can host the entire through Gitlab and Netlify for free. No more hosting fees. This also gets me Git style workflow, branching, version control, etc. I find that the bandwidth is a bit lower overall, so I may have to think twice about hosting all of my photos here, but I have a few ideas in that regard.
For the curious, here’s the current list of the new setup:
- Hugo for the content
- Sam as the base of my theme
- Flickity to create my image carousels
- Google for my fonts
- Gitlab to host the repository
- Netlify to serve it up
- Forestry as a friendly writing environment on top of it all
I’m sure the list will grow as I continue to port my old content / add new bits.
